Netflix Pick of the Week: Wizards

In between Shark Week and coordinating Pandemic Plan C of my wedding, I still made time to watch Wizards on Netflix. I have been waiting for this show to be released for quite some time, and there’s no way I was going to wait to binge watch it. It’s part three of a series that I am more than a little obsessed with. And with only ten episodes in this first season, I was able to finish it very quickly. I really wish there had been more episodes. And yes, I am now eagerly awaiting more.

img_0977Wizards: Tales of Arcadia Created by Guillermo Del Torro – Animation, Action, Adventure, Fantasy: Part thee of the Tales of Arcadia series, this follows the adventures of Douxie as he teams up with familiar characters from the previous installations of the series. Trollhunters and Trolls, Creepslayerz, Aliens, and Wizards unite to save Arcadia (and the world) from yet another threat. This time around, time travel is involved as the team visits Camelot in their fight against dark supernatural forces.

Pros: I love this series so much simply because it was created by Guillermo Del Torro. This past year, I have binge watched Trollhunters and 3Below, and I have been waiting patiently for Wizards ever since. I love the visual style and the animation, and I am always impressed by the casting. This third installment of the series is no exception. The characters were so well developed that it took no time at all to fall in love with some of the new faces that appeared. I also loved the fact that Douxie, who has been a somewhat insignificant character in the rest of the series, was actually Merlin’s apprentice important all along. But that’s one of the things that I love about this series. If someone is a background character in one chapter, they could easily become a main character in another. Every character is significant.

img_0978Cons: I want to say that the story in Wizards isn’t quite as well-rounded as the stories in Trollhunters and 3Below. However, when I binged the first two chapters of the series, there were five seasons in total for me to watch. So obviously, with only one season so far, the story in Wizards hasn’t had a chance to get to that point. I was also looking forward to meeting a whole bunch of new characters, yet Wizards features much of the Trollhunters cast, to the point where it felt more like a direct sequel to that particular chapter of the series. The characters and events of 3Below were only included peripherally. To be fair, aliens don’t exactly fit in with the kinds of things you might find in Camelot

Final Thoughts: Obviously, I’m biased because I’m such a huge fan of Del Torro, I will never not enjoy new installments in this series. In fact, a trailer has already been released for a Tales of Arcadia film that will be coming to Netflix in 2021 and I am extremely excited. This series is filled with all kinds of things that I love, and the story and characters are always well crafted. I really hope there will be more seasons of Wizards. I will be very sad when this series is over.
