Reading, Writing, And Resting: My February Writing Update

I’m going to be honest, I did not make much progress on my writing goals this month.

Skull Daddy is still with Trevor for additional feedback, and I decided to let The Tunnel rest for a month. After losing weeks worth of work and having to re-write it all at the end of January, I did not want to dive back in to another round of edits too soon. I was worried I’d drag those negative emotions in and do more harm than good. So, with no major editing projects on the go, I decided to spend the month writing.

One of my casual goals for 2024 is to write a large flash/microfiction collection of what I’ve been calling “silly little horror stories”. The working title for this project is Flasher and I’ve been having a lot of fun with it. That being said, it is an ambitious project given the number of stories I aim to write for the collection. I’ve been on the lookout for those deliciously dark nuggets of inspiration and “what if” moments, and I have a backlog of post-it notes for all the ideas I haven’t been able to turn into fully fledged stories yet.

Unfortunately, I did not get the chance to write as many short stories this month as I hoped. The past few months, I’ve been dealing with minor health problems, resulting in a great deal of fatigue and brain fog. Thankfully, my doctor discovered the cause and told me how to fix things. But the moment I started feeling better, I caught a cold.

With three in-person events to attend this past month, I saved my spoons for those days and did what I could with my remaining workdays. In making my health a priority, I fell behind in both my reading and writing goals for the month of February. For next week’s blog post, I’ll be talking about writer wellness, so more on this to come.

Thankfully, I’m on the mend! With the brain fog and fatigue clearing away, I am now planning a month of intense editing and writing for March. But, of course, I will continue to listen to my body and do what’s right for me.
