Skulls & Sharks & So Much More! July 2026 Writing Update

I was trying to think of a third thing that started with an “s” but… Well, you see how that went. And my main priorities this month have been Skull Daddy II and Shark Week.

First, let’s address the great white in the room: I am beyond disappointed that Discovery has incorporated generative AI into their programming and social media posts this year. I love seeing sharks on tv and learning as much as I can about them, but it makes me uncomfortable to see folks preaching ocean/shark conversation while engaging with something so harmful to the environment. I only hope that Discovery listens to the many critiques I’ve seen online this year and skips the AI generated content next year.

On the professional side of things, Skull Daddy II has been my only writing project. I even put my Throckmorton work on hold. Between checking in with the various other people involved (i.e. cover artist, critique partners, editor) and doing a final (hopefully?) round of edits, it really hasn’t left much time for any other writing. And I know exactly which date I want to launch the book on, but I need to wait on final confirmation from those other folks before I move forward with an announcement. I get that everyone else involved is working hard, but waiting is my least favourite part.

And, as always, I’ve been working on other things as well. Some of you may have already seen that I’ll be a guest speaker for Tipsy Scholars in August. I initially approached them about doing a talk on horror writing, but (like a lot of people) they were more interested in hearing about cats. Can you blame them? So I’ve been working on a custom cat care presentation just for them. And, well, I prepared too much info and now I have to edit down. I should’ve known this would happen, especially given that cats (like sharks) are one of my autistic special interests.

Is that all?

No, of course not!

You all know I’ve started to promote the next two installments of Books on Tap – and one of them is the non-alcoholic version! I did not expect finding a non-alcoholic location would be so challenging, but I’m pleased to say that not only did Cafe Bon Vivant reply to my emails (seriously, I got ghosted A LOT) but they’ve been a dream to work with. And, as always, we’ve got amazing authors showing up at both events.

Do I have more events in the works behind the scenes? You know it! But I can’t talk about any of them just yet. Out of the four (yes, four) additional events I’m working on hosting/co-hosting, only one is confirmed and just about ready to be announced.

So, until next time, Stay Spooky!
