Netflix Pick of the Week: Cooked With Cannabis

I’ve loved watching the Food Network for as long as I can remember, but when Mark and I moved in together I shifted my casual viewing over to HGTV instead.  And now that we’ve gotten rid of our cable subscription, I am more or less at the mercy of streaming services.  That means I really haven’t been watching as many cooking shows over the past couple of years as I used to. So whenever I see a fun looking cooking competition show on Netflix, it usually goes on my list.  I always forget how much I love those kinds of shows, so I think now I need to be a little more proactive in adding cooking competitions to my Netflix list.

img_9665Cooked with Cannabis directed by Rik Reinholdtsen – Reality TV: Hosted by Kelis and Leather Storrs, this is certainly one wild cooking show.  Contestants compete for a cash prize by serving up a three course meal to the hosts and special guest judges.  And, as the title suggests, each meal is cooked with cannabis. It’s no surprise that, by the end of the meal, there isn’t a sober judge in sight.

Pros: I liked how the chefs weren’t simply being judged on how cannabis was incorporated; they were being judged on the dosing as well.  They knew exactly how much THC/CBD was in each meal and how it would affect the judges.  Not something I initially expected them to be judged on, but it makes sense.

Cons: Definitely more of a weed show than a cooking show.  There wasn’t a whole lot of critique on the actual cooking skills.  And by the end of each meal, the judges were usually too stoned to give any critique other than “this was good/bad”. It was clear that weed was always the most important element.

Final Thoughts: This show was a lot of fun and perfect to have on in the background while I did my own cooking/baking.  If there’s a second season, I’ll definitely watch it.  Although I hope there will be some more cooking critique and a bit more focus placed on food.
